WHO: 4.6 billion people lack access to basic health services
Geneva, December 12 (Hibya) – World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that 4.6 billion people lack access to basic health services and that 2.1 billion people are forced to pay for health care out of pocket.
WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus noted that this year’s Universal Health Coverage Day highlights the devastating humanitarian impact of unaffordable health costs.
Stating that 4.6 billion people lack access to basic health services, Ghebreyesus said: “2.1 billion people face financial hardship because they have to pay for health care out of pocket.”
Ghebreyesus added that the WHO is working worldwide with countries to close these gaps and support progress toward universal health coverage, emphasizing: “Because health is not a privilege only for those who can afford it; it is a right for everyone.”
