Tsahkna: History must not repeat itself
Tallinn, August 23 (Hibya) – Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said that the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, signed in 1939 between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, paved the way for the division of Europe into spheres of influence and the occupation of the Baltic states.
Tsahkna noted that 37 years ago, around 2 million people joined hands to form the 700-kilometer Baltic Chain, saying, “They exposed the existence of the secret protocol, and ultimately we regained our independence.”
Noting that the consequences of the occupation are still being felt, Tsahkna said, “Today we remember every person and every family who suffered under totalitarian regimes, and reiterate that the words ‘never again’ must remain a promise backed by action.”
Tsahkna argued that Russia is once again trying to change borders and create spheres of influence in line with its imperial ambitions, saying, “We cannot allow history to repeat itself.”
Stressing that support for Ukraine must continue and pressure on Russia must remain strong, Tsahkna said, “Aggression repeats itself when it goes without consequences. Those who violate international law must be held accountable.”
