Palestine congratulates Ahmed on election as OIC Secretary-General
Ramallah, August 27 (Hibya) - The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed the election of Mauritanian diplomat Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed as Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
In a statement, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry wished Ahmed success in his new role and expressed hope that the OIC would strengthen cooperation and coordination on common issues concerning the Islamic world.
The statement also expressed hope that the new term would contribute to defending the just causes of the Islamic world, foremost among them the Palestinian cause. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry also thanked outgoing Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha for his efforts to strengthen joint Islamic action and support the Palestinian cause.
The ministry called on the OIC to continue playing an active role in supporting the Palestinian people's right to self-determination, ending the Israeli occupation and ensuring accountability for violations of international law.
The statement also emphasized the importance of supporting Palestine's right to establish an independent, fully sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the borders of June 4, 1967.
