UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed the geopolitical divisions, economic tensions, and atmosphere of distrust in the world, outlining the principles on which the international system must stand.

Assessing the global picture, Guterres said: “In a world marked by widening geopolitical divisions, economic tensions, and persistent distrust, we must reaffirm international law and the foundations we need for the future.”

Listing the fundamental approaches needed, Guterres said: “Dialogue instead of conflict. Obligation instead of self-interest. And the power of law instead of the law of power.”
