United States (US) President Donald Trump commented on the artificial intelligence sector, saying that industry leaders' calls for strict regulation could negatively affect their own operations.

Trump said it was unprecedented in business history for industry executives to demand regulations that, if strongly enforced, could drive their companies into bankruptcy.

Describing claims that artificial intelligence will take over the world and destroy humanity as a “hoax,” Trump compared such assertions with political debates from the past.

Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping had announced that China would not create any obstacles to the development of artificial intelligence.

Trump said Google was planning to build a major facility in Finland because permitting processes in the US had become more difficult, adding that he was unhappy about this and wanted the company to change its approach on the matter.

Commenting on the economic impact of artificial intelligence and data centers, Trump argued that artificial intelligence would be “the greatest engine of economic development in history.”

Trump said it would create an area of economic growth larger than oil, gold, diamonds and even the internet, adding that he would not allow the artificial intelligence sector to be held back during his presidency.
