Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani met with the foreign minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The meeting addressed political and economic relations between the two countries as well as developments in the Great Lakes region.

Tajani said the Democratic Republic of the Congo was one of the priority countries under Italy’s Mattei Plan, adding, “We want to revitalize our relations and strengthen political and economic cooperation, creating new opportunities for both countries.”

Tajani said they had decided to establish a working group between the two countries’ foreign ministries and launch a process toward a political agreement on critical raw materials. He also announced that a business forum would be organized to expand cooperation and investment opportunities for Italian companies.

Addressing the situation in the Great Lakes region, Tajani said, “Italy supports diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting dialogue, reducing tensions and contributing to the stability of the region.”

Tajani also said they had agreed to establish a permanent consultation mechanism at the United Nations on issues concerning the African continent. Ambassador Luca Attanasio, Carabiniere Scelto Vittorio Iacovacci and Mustapha Milambo were also commemorated during the meeting.
