Lazzarini: Winter is deepening the misery of people in the Gaza Strip
New York, January 22 (Hibya) – Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), spoke about the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini issued remarks on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and the challenges brought by winter.
Sharing data on the scale of destruction in Gaza, Lazzarini said: “Winter is further deepening the misery of people in the Gaza Strip; the vast majority of the population has been forcibly displaced and is living in tents and partially destroyed buildings.”
Lazzarini added: “After two years of war, Gaza lies in ruins; thousands of people remain missing and are presumed to have died under the rubble, 92 percent of homes have been damaged or destroyed, and large amounts of unexploded ordnance remain uncleared.”
Calling on the international community to adopt a solutions-oriented approach, Lazzarini concluded: “International efforts must fully focus on restoring dignified living conditions for people in Gaza, respecting their rights, and placing the interests of those in need at the center of the intervention.”
