Installation of block transformers completed at Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant
Moscow, February 3 (Hibya) – According to information provided to RIA by the press service of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, the installation of unit transformers for the first power unit of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), which is under construction in Türkiye, has been completed.
The press service stated: “The transportation and installation of step-up transformers to their design positions at the Akkuyu NPP site (constructed by the state corporation Rosatom) have been completed. The equipment was moved from the storage area and placed on specially prepared foundations. Positioning the transformers in their design locations was an important step in preparing for subsequent work, including connecting the power equipment of the power unit, conducting high-voltage tests, and forming the Akkuyu NPP power distribution system.”
Sergey Butskikh, CEO of Akkuyu Nuclear JSC, said: “Step-up transformers are one of the key elements of the power distribution system of the power unit. They transmit the electricity generated by the turbine generator to the integrated switchgear system and then to the unified power grid of the Republic of Türkiye. The transformers are equipped with modern protection systems and special switching devices that allow precise voltage regulation.”
The press service noted that work on the transformers continues with the participation of the manufacturer’s specialists, including the phased installation of high-voltage bushings, cooling systems, and control and monitoring systems. Before connection, the transformers will undergo a series of high-voltage tests.
Türkiye is carrying out intensive efforts to commission the first power unit of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in 2026. Akkuyu, Türkiye’s first nuclear power plant, is being built with Russia’s participation. It consists of four power units equipped with advanced Russian-designed Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors. Each unit will have a capacity of 1,200 MW. The Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is the first project in the global nuclear industry to be implemented under the Build-Own-Operate model.
