Guterres issues statement on UN staff member who died in Yemen
New York, November 1 (Hibya) - United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed sorrow over the death of Mohammad al-Shami, a staff member of the UN Human Rights Office who died while detained in Houthi-controlled Yemen, and called for the release of detained UN and humanitarian personnel.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a statement regarding Mohammad al-Shami, a UN staff member who died while detained in an area under the de facto control of the Houthis in Yemen.
Guterres expressed deep sorrow over the death of al-Shami, noting that he had been arbitrarily detained since 2024 and had worked for the UN Human Rights Office.
Guterres recalled that a World Food Programme (WFP) staff member had also died in Houthi custody in 2025, noting that al-Shami's death marked the second death among UN personnel detained by the Houthis.
Reiterating his serious concerns about the safety and well-being of currently detained UN personnel, former UN staff members, and employees of humanitarian and non-governmental organizations, Guterres called for their immediate and unconditional release.
