CENTCOM: El Gaia tanker struck by Iranian missile
Washington, September 14 (Hibya) - US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the Panama-flagged oil tanker El Gaia was struck by Iran with a missile and an unmanned aerial vehicle.
CENTCOM said the claim by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) that a Panama-flagged oil tanker struck a sea mine in the Strait of Hormuz was not true.
In a post, CENTCOM said the El Gaia tanker was struck by an Iranian missile last month and rendered inoperable.
The post also stated that Iran struck the tanker again with an unmanned aerial vehicle this weekend while it was off the coast of Oman, and that the vessel is currently being towed by a regional partner.
CENTCOM described the IRGC's claim as an example of "lies and intimidation attempts" aimed at disrupting the activities of commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
