Zelenskyy: Ukraine faces a $27 billion funding gap for defense
Kyiv, August 24 (Hibya) - Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said that under the Coalition of the Willing, his country faces a $27 billion shortfall in its defense budget, proposing that part of European loans be brought forward to this year and that frozen Russian assets be used to protect Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said the Coalition of the Willing format brings together countries that not only hold discussions on security but also have the will to build common security.
Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine faces a $27 billion funding gap in its defense budget. He said the shortfall resulted from the Ukrainian Defense Ministry using at the beginning of the year some of the funds that had been budgeted for the end of the year.
Zelenskyy said one option for covering the funding gap would be to bring forward part of the European loans to this year, adding that other options capable of ensuring Ukraine’s protection during the war should not be abandoned.
Zelenskyy also noted that frozen Russian assets are held in Europe and other countries, including Japan, and said a fair way should be found to use those assets to protect Ukraine against Russia’s war.
Zelenskyy thanked all members of the Coalition of the Willing for their support.
