The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Syrian Arab Republic issued a statement regarding the US decision to remove Syria from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism.

The statement said the decision opened a new chapter in Syria’s international relations and thanked the United States and the administration of US President Donald J. Trump.

The ministry said the decision, taken after decades, would support economic recovery, help create the conditions necessary for reconstruction, and strengthen stability and security in Syria and the region.

It was noted that the decision was also expected to have positive effects on the Syrian people and neighboring countries.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry said it hoped further steps would be taken to remove the remaining restrictions hindering economic recovery. The statement called for support for Syria’s return to its natural and active role in the Arab region and the broader international community.

The statement said Syria aims to deepen its strategic partnerships with the United States and the international community and expand cooperation, expressing hope that this cooperation would serve shared interests, stability, development and stronger economic cooperation in Syria.
