Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that they visited the Bykivnia Cemetery National Historical Memorial Preserve to commemorate the victims of political repression during the Soviet era. Zelensky stated that hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians and people of different nationalities were targeted by the Soviet terror mechanism, adding that they observed a moment of silence in memory of those who lost their lives and laid flowers at the memorial to the Polish victims.
Zelensky stated that Russia’s policies of repression and cruelty from the past continue today, saying that allowing evil to go unpunished leads to the resurgence of repression.
Noting that Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilian detainees held in Russia are experiencing similar suffering, Zelensky emphasized that efforts must be made at every level to bring all prisoners back. Zelensky stated that the perpetrators must be held accountable before justice and that the free world has the power to ensure this.
