European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen shared a condolence message on the passing of former Cypriot President Giorgos Vassiliou.

Underscoring Vassiliou’s importance for Cyprus and Europe, von der Leyen said: “I learned with sadness of the death of former Cypriot President Giorgos Vassiliou. He was a man of vision; he modernized Cyprus, advanced the peace process, and opened the path for its accession to our Union. He was a true European.”

Von der Leyen concluded her message by saying: “I extend my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and to the entire Cypriot people.”
