Meloni on Migration: Time to Move from Rules to Action
Rome, 19 June (Hibya) - Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for new informal meetings and pilot projects on migration management at the European Union (EU) level, stating that “return mechanisms must be accelerated.”
Meloni made remarks on migration policies on the sidelines of the European Council meeting.
Together with Mette Frederiksen and Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, Meloni announced support for a new process of informal meetings among certain member states aimed at developing “innovative solutions” in migration management.
Meloni noted that the European Union has recently taken important steps in the field of migration, highlighting the “safe third countries list,” return mechanisms, and financial support packages.
Emphasizing that it is now time for implementation, Meloni said: “Now we need to accelerate. It is time to move from rules to action.” She stressed the importance of making return procedures more effective and launching pilot initiatives.
Meloni also stated that the idea of establishing “joint return centers” in certain third countries is being considered and reaffirmed Italy’s determination to strengthen border security and combat irregular migration.
