EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas commented on the Israeli authorities’ decision to extend the mandates of the EU’s two Common Security and Defence Policy missions in Rafah and the West Bank.

Kallas said the decision, taken after months of diplomatic talks, was an important step and thanked the European External Action Service and the relevant member states for their work in securing the extension of the mandates.

Kallas said the missions aim to help make crossing points safer and more effective, support the Palestinian police forces and contribute to regional stability, adding that the EU missions continue to work with all relevant parties to fulfil their mandates.

Kallas said the missions respond to concrete needs on the Palestinian side and remain an important part of the EU’s engagement on the ground, adding that the EU will continue to support the Gaza Peace Plan backed by UN Security Council Resolution 2803.
