Former senior Israeli military lawyer arrested after leaked video scandal
Stockholm, November 3 (Hibya) – Israeli police have arrested the country’s former senior military lawyer on suspicion of faking a suicide attempt to dispose of a phone containing incriminating evidence linked to a leaked video showing soldiers assaulting a Palestinian detainee.
Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi disappeared on Sunday after leaving a note for her family and abandoning her car on the beach.
She was later found alive and in good condition and placed under police supervision.
Israel’s Channel 12 reported that police suspect Tomer-Yerushalmi staged the suicide attempt to get rid of the phone she had thrown into the sea. The note she left behind was described as “vague” and “forged.”
Before her disappearance on Sunday, Tomer-Yerushalmi was to be questioned about the leak of security camera footage from the Sde Teiman detention camp showing soldiers gang-raping a Palestinian detainee behind shields.
On Wednesday, the Israeli army opened a criminal investigation into the leak.
Two days later, Tomer-Yerushalmi admitted to leaking the video and resigned.
The scandal caused a major public outcry in Israel, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Sunday for an independent investigation, saying the leak had “seriously damaged Israel’s public image.”
