Dar: Wheat supply must be increased to stabilize prices
Islamabad, October 24 (Hibya) - Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar instructed federal and provincial authorities to take necessary measures, including increasing supply, to stabilize rising wheat prices during a meeting reviewing the stocks, prices and availability of essential food commodities.
According to a statement published on the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs' social media account, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar chaired a high-level meeting of the Cabinet Committee to review the stocks, prices and supply situation of essential commodities.
The meeting comprehensively reviewed national stocks, supply mechanisms, domestic consumption and price trends. It was reported that domestic stocks of daily essential commodities were at adequate levels, ensuring stability in local supply.
Regarding wheat, it was stated that domestic stocks and imported supplies were sufficient to meet requirements until the next harvest season. However, expressing concern over the upward trend in wheat prices, Dar called for all necessary measures to stabilize prices, including increasing the supply of wheat.
As for sugar, participants were informed that its domestic market price remained below the target retail price of 155 Pakistani rupees per kilogram and that sufficient stocks were available until the next processing season.
Dar emphasized that safeguarding national food security and ensuring the availability of essential commodities at reasonable prices were government priorities. He instructed federal and provincial officials to closely monitor market networks and stressed that all institutions must adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward hoarding and market speculation.
The meeting was attended by the Minister for National Food Security and Research, the Minister for Climate Change, Special Assistant Tariq Bajwa, the secretaries of the Ministries of National Food Security and Research and Commerce, provincial chief secretaries, and senior officials from relevant federal and provincial institutions.
