President of the European Council Antonio Costa made a statement regarding his official contacts in Damascus, the capital of Syria, and expectations for the new period.

Referring to the series of meetings in Damascus, Costa said: “Together with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, we met with President Al-Sharaa in Damascus. After many years of war and suffering, the fall of the Assad regime has finally become a ray of hope for the Syrian people.”

Clarifying the purpose of the visit and the EU’s position, Costa stated: “The purpose of our presence here today is to demonstrate the EU’s continued support for Syria.”
