According to CCTV, the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo announced on Sunday that 5,945 confirmed cases had been recorded in the country's current Ebola outbreak, of which 2,862 had resulted in deaths.

The outbreak, caused by Bundibugyo ebolavirus, was declared by DRC authorities in May. It was stated that there is currently no licensed vaccine or specific treatment for this strain of the virus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Friday, following the recommendation of the Emergency Committee that met on August 18, that the outbreak continues to constitute a public health emergency of international concern.

The WHO warned that delays in detecting cases increase the likelihood of the disease spreading within households, communities and healthcare facilities.
