Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone call last night with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Xi Jinping recalled that the contacts he maintained with Trump last year helped steer bilateral relations and were positively received by both peoples and the international community. Stating that he is ready to work with Trump in the new year to maintain stability in bilateral relations, Xi noted that both sides have sensitive issues, but emphasized that China has remained faithful to its commitments and that problems can be resolved on the basis of mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit.

President Xi pointed out that both countries have busy agendas this year, noting that China has entered the period of its 15th Five-Year Plan, while the United States will celebrate the 250th anniversary of its founding. He also recalled that the APEC and G20 summits will be hosted by the two countries. Xi called on both sides to implement their consensuses, increase dialogue and contacts, properly manage differences, and enhance pragmatic cooperation.

Xi expressed his hope that 2026 would be a year in which China and the United States move forward along the path of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, cooperation, and mutual benefit.

Touching on the Taiwan issue, Xi stressed that this matter is the most important and sensitive issue in China–U.S. relations, emphasizing that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. Xi conveyed that the United States should exercise extreme caution regarding arms sales to the Taiwan region.

U.S. President Trump stated that the United States and China are major countries and that their bilateral relationship is the most important bilateral relationship in the world. Reiterating his great respect for Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump said that under the leadership of himself and Xi, the two countries have maintained healthy interaction in the fields of economy and trade. Trump expressed that the United States, which appreciates China’s achievements, is ready to strengthen cooperation with China, attaches great importance to China’s sensitivities on the Taiwan issue, and will continue contacts with China.
