X halts Grok AI from showing photos of real people in revealing clothing
New York, Jan. 15 (Hibya) — Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence model Grok will no longer show photos of real people in revealing clothing in jurisdictions where it is illegal, following widespread concerns over sexually explicit AI deepfakes.
In a statement, X said: “We have taken technological measures to prevent the Grok account from allowing the editing of images of real people in revealing clothing.”
In response to the ban, the UK government claimed it had been “right,” after Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer asked X to rein in the AI tool.
Musk had previously defended X, saying critics “only want to suppress free speech,” and had shared two AI-generated images depicting UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in a bikini.
In recent days, leaders around the world have criticized Grok’s image-editing feature.
Over the weekend, Malaysia and Indonesia became the first countries to ban the Grok AI tool after users said photos had been altered without consent to create sexually explicit images.
The change was announced hours after California’s attorney general said an investigation had been launched into the spread of sexually explicit AI deepfakes produced by the model, including those involving children.
In a statement on Wednesday, X said: “We are geographically blocking, in regions where it is illegal, the ability of the Grok account and the Grok tool on X to create images of real people in bikinis, underwear, and similar clothing.”
The platform also reiterated that only paid users can edit images using Grok.
According to the statement, this adds an additional layer of protection by ensuring accountability for those who attempt to misuse Grok to violate the law or X’s policies.
