UNRWA: UN member states must implement international law
New York, January 22 (Hibya) – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) issued a statement regarding the demolition of buildings within the UNRWA Headquarters, a United Nations compound in East Jerusalem.
In its statement, UNRWA said the demolition of buildings within the UNRWA Headquarters in the United Nations compound in East Jerusalem, which began on Tuesday, is unprecedented, adding: “However, this forms part of a pattern of deliberate disregard for international law and the United Nations.”
The statement stressed that UN member states must implement international law without delay, adding:
“This UNRWA compound is a United Nations facility and is therefore inviolable under the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations. It was first leased to UNRWA from Jordan in 1952.”
The statement further noted: “UNRWA remained in exclusive and uninterrupted possession of the compound until 1967 and has continuously retained this possession since Israel’s occupation of the area; Israel’s occupation has been determined to be unlawful by the International Court of Justice.”
