Rubio: New START no longer serves its purpose
Washington, February 6 (Hibya) – United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the New START Treaty, which was negotiated in a different era to respond to a different threat, no longer serves its purpose.
U.S. Secretary of State Rubio noted that the New START Treaty expired yesterday, stating that the agreement, negotiated in a different period and in response to a different threat, no longer fulfills its intended purpose.
Emphasizing that their desire to reduce global nuclear threats is sincere, Rubio said they would not accept conditions that would harm the United States or overlook non-compliance merely for the sake of having an agreement. “We will set high standards for all potential nuclear actors. And we will always negotiate from a position of strength,” he said.
