Swedish Prime Minister Kristersson said his country has become an international “role model” in the fight against serious gang crime.

In a social media post, Kristersson said Sweden had previously been cited internationally as a negative example when it came to gang crime, but that significant progress had been made as a result of the policies implemented.

Kristersson said that since his government took office in 2022, deadly gang violence has fallen by 75 percent and shootings by 80 percent, while twice as many gang criminals have been arrested abroad during the same period.

Kristersson said these results were the outcome of a stronger police force, new tools provided to law enforcement, tougher measures against organized crime and international cooperation, and thanked the countries that supported Sweden in bringing dangerous criminals to justice.

Pointing out that organized crime networks operate across borders, Kristersson said these structures pose a serious risk of violence and crime not only to Sweden but also to the other countries in which they operate.

Kristersson said: “Most of the clean-up work has been completed, but we will not be finished until we have completely defeated the gangs and restored a sense of security for everyone in Sweden.”

The Swedish prime minister said Sunday's election would determine whether the government would get the opportunity to complete its work, adding: “We must leave our children and grandchildren a safe and secure country.”
