Greek Foreign Minister Gerapetritis assessed his engagements on the fifth day of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Gerapetritis said they held two important trilateral meetings in the Greece-Cyprus-Jordan and Greece-Cyprus-Egypt formats, noting that the talks were important for strengthening the position of Greece and Cyprus in the region and developing relations.

Noting that the region is experiencing wars, unrest and armed conflicts, Gerapetritis said they also held meetings with the foreign ministers of Brazil, India, Eritrea and countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Gerapetritis said the Global South is developing rapidly and that it is important for Greece to remain in constant contact with these countries.

Gerapetritis also said they participated in an event organized at the initiative of Greece and India on the use of artificial intelligence in shipping, maritime security and freedom of navigation. Stating that advances in artificial intelligence should progress alongside social development, Gerapetritis said technology should be placed at the service of humanity and that the limits of its use should be determined on the basis of human progress.

Gerapetritis also said they participated in the founding meeting of the Group of Friends on maritime transport and the safety of seafarers, noting that freedom of navigation is important both for Greece and globally. He said obstructing freedom of navigation poses a serious risk to the global supply chain and the prosperity of societies.

Gerapetritis said Greece will assume the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council in October for the second time during its two-year term, adding that important issues affecting humanity, particularly armed conflicts, will be addressed during this period. He also said the election of the new UN Secretary-General is important for the future of the organization, regional relations and global issues, noting that Greece is developing its diplomatic relations through strong alliances and an active foreign policy.
