Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis made statements following the Trilateral Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Cairo on January 18, 2026, with Egypt and Cyprus. He stated that regional and international developments were discussed at the meeting, saying: “We put diplomacy ahead of war and promote stability in the region instead of chaos.”

The meeting particularly addressed the situation in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as Syria, Yemen, Sudan, the Horn of Africa, Iran, and Libya. Gerapetritis also shared his views on the peace process in Gaza, saying: “We envision the Mediterranean not as a region associated with conflicts, but as a region where all peoples and future generations will live in peace.”

The minister emphasized that Greece supports the Two-State solution based on United Nations (UN) resolutions and attaches importance to the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state. He also confirmed that U.S. President Trump invited Greece to become a founding member of the Peace Council, stating: “Greece stands by all initiatives that promote peace, security, and stability.”

Gerapetritis also touched upon the historical foundations of trilateral cooperation and maritime security, noting: “Greece, Egypt, and Cyprus attach special importance to the full implementation of international maritime law and the security of sea lanes. The Red Sea, in particular, is a critical link in international trade routes.”

The meeting also covered strengthening regional cooperation and creating new opportunities in the fields of economy, trade, tourism, energy, and technology.
