Dujarric: Ceasefire in Lebanon largely holding, security risks remain
New York, June 24 (Hibya) - United Nations Secretary-General's Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric commented on the latest situation in Lebanon during a press briefing on Tuesday.
According to CCTV, United Nations Secretary-General's Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric commented on the latest situation in Lebanon during a press briefing on Tuesday.
Dujarric stated that the ceasefire announced on June 19 is largely holding, but military activity in the region and the risk of sporadic clashes have not completely disappeared. According to UN data, some civilians have started returning to their homes, although the overall humanitarian situation remains fragile.
Referring to observations by UNIFIL, Dujarric said that UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon have encountered various military activities and aerial assets, while patrols in some areas have been hindered by roadblocks and other obstacles.
In addition, a joint assessment by the United Nations Development Programme and Lebanon’s National Council for Scientific Research reported that more than 11,000 homes have been completely destroyed, while 2,200 homes have suffered partial damage.
Dujarric said: "The continuing uncertainty, widespread destruction, and the threat posed by unexploded ordnance continue to prevent safe and sustainable returns. We and our partners continue to call for conditions that protect civilians and allow displaced families to return voluntarily, safely, and, of course, with dignity to their homes."
