Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar made a statement regarding the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement signed in Mecca on August 7 between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.

Dar said the agreement reflects the relationship between the leaders and peoples of the three countries and is the result of many years of consultations and coordination.

Dar stressed that the agreement neither abolishes nor replaces existing bilateral or multilateral agreements. He added that any external armed attack against any of the three countries would be regarded as an attack against all three, in line with the individual and collective right of self-defense under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.

Dar said the Mecca Agreement is “entirely defensive in nature” and is not aimed at any country. He added that its purpose is to strengthen efforts toward peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

He stated that the agreement is open to regional countries that accept its core principles and are prepared to resolve their disputes through mutual respect, cooperation and peaceful means. Dar added that Pakistan will continue working with regional countries for peace and stability.

Dar also reaffirmed his country’s commitment to resolving all conflicts through peaceful means and to working toward a safer, more stable and more prosperous future for the peoples of the region.
