European Council President Antonio Costa met Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden in Luxembourg.

Costa said they discussed the European Union’s (EU) next budget framework and reviewed work under the “One Europe, one market” agenda.

In a post on social media, Costa expressed his pleasure at meeting Frieden again in Luxembourg. The meeting was said to have taken place at the start of the second week of Costa’s engagements under #TourdesCapitales.

Costa said he welcomed Luxembourg’s constructive contribution to discussions on the EU’s next budget framework.

Costa said the meeting also addressed progress made under the “One Europe, one market” agenda and stressed that work to complete the European Single Market must be accelerated.

Costa noted that more private investment needs to be mobilized to complete the European Single Market, reduce administrative burdens, and support growth, employment and prosperity in Europe.

In his statement, Costa emphasized that implementation of the “One Europe, one market” agenda must be accelerated, saying these steps would contribute to strengthening the European economy.

Highlighting the importance of boosting Europe’s competitiveness for strategic autonomy, Costa said, “Strengthening European competitiveness is at the heart of our strategic autonomy.”

At the end of his post, Costa expressed his pleasure at being in Luxembourg by using the Luxembourgish phrase, “Ech freee mech, hei zu Letzebuerg ze sinn!”
