Carney recalled that more than 800 Newfoundland soldiers went into battle, and that more than 700 of them were killed, wounded, or reported missing in a single day.
The statement emphasized that despite these devastating losses, the Newfoundland Regiment continued fighting throughout the First World War until 1918.
In his message, Carney said they honor all those who gave their lives for freedom and peace, stressing that their sacrifices must never be forgotten.
