Canadian Prime Minister Carney said in a post on social media that a shooting took place outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville on the holiest night of the Jewish calendar.

Carney said that a police officer was shot in the attack and that the incident caused concern within the Jewish community.

Stating that Jewish people must be able to worship safely and live their lives freely, Carney said the Canadian government would support law enforcement to ensure that the person responsible for the attack is held accountable in accordance with the law.

Carney extended his wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured police officer and his family, as well as to the entire Jewish community.
