Australia launches its largest gun buyback program in 30 years
Stockholm, December 19 (Hibya) – The federal government will launch a new gun buyback program in response to the terrorist attack at Bondi Beach, which Anthony Albanese said would be the largest weapons collection program since the Port Arthur massacre nearly thirty years ago.
The prime minister said on Friday that the costs of the buyback program, which will result in the destruction of hundreds of thousands of firearms, will be shared between the federal government and the states.
States and territories will collect the surrendered weapons, while the Australian Federal Police will oversee their destruction.
Albanese declared Sunday a national day of remembrance for the 15 victims of the Bondi attack, confirmed information from the Office of National Intelligence, and said the attackers had used regular online video game streams linked to the ISIS terrorist organization.
