Poet, writer, and public official Nariman Hasanzade, one of the leading representatives of Azerbaijani literature, has died.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced on his social media account that Nariman Hasanzade died on August 1, 2026, at the age of 96.

In his statement, Aliyev said Hasanzade was one of the leading figures of contemporary Azerbaijani literature and had contributed to the country’s culture through his works.

Born on February 2, 1931, in the village of Poylu in Azerbaijan’s Gazakh district, Nariman Hasanzade studied at the Faculty of Language and Literature of the Ganja State Pedagogical Institute. He later continued his education at the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute in Moscow.

Throughout his career, Hasanzade held various positions at the newspaper “Azerbaijan Youth,” the magazine “Azerbaijan,” and the Azerbaijan Television and Radio Broadcasting Committee. Between 1978 and 1991, he served as editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Literature and Art.”

Hasanzade served as Deputy Minister and Acting Minister of Press and Information of the Republic of Azerbaijan between 1991 and 2001. From 2001 until his death, he headed the Department of Humanities at the National Aviation Academy.

President Aliyev noted that Hasanzade’s contributions to literature and culture had been recognized with various state awards. In addition to the “Shohrat,” “Sharaf,” and “Istiglal” orders, Hasanzade was awarded the “Heydar Aliyev” Order in 2026.

Aliyev said Nariman Hasanzade’s place in Azerbaijani literature and culture would never be forgotten and offered his condolences to the poet’s family, relatives, and admirers.
