Zelensky marks 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution
Kyiv, October 23 (Hibya) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commemorated the Hungarian people's struggle for freedom in a message marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, emphasizing the need to support societies fighting for freedom.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a social media statement that the Hungarian people's uprising against the Soviet system in 1956 was a significant turning point for Europe and the world.
Zelensky noted that the courage and love of freedom demonstrated by Hungarians at that time continue to inspire admiration across Europe today. He stated that the international community had failed to make the strong decisions necessary to help the Hungarian people. According to Zelensky, this allowed authoritarian regimes to persist across much of Europe for several more decades, a period that ended only with the revolutions of the 1980s.
Stating that 1956 could have significantly changed the course of history, Zelensky emphasized the importance of supporting people who demonstrate courage in their struggle for freedom. He noted that such support would contribute to the advancement of freedom throughout the world.
Zelensky thanked everyone who remembers their history, honors people's courage and their struggle for freedom, and does not hesitate to make decisions when necessary. He also paid tribute to the heroes of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
