German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul thanked Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in a social media statement for hosting the meeting in Istanbul. Wadephul noted that the E4 countries, comprising Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Italy, and the R4 countries, comprising Türkiye, Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, had come together for the first time.
Wadephul stated that European and regional partners shared a sense of urgency about preventing further escalation in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, emphasizing that they aimed to find a way out of the long-running conflicts.
Noting that there was no easy solution, Wadephul said they were ready to explore new diplomatic approaches to help restore stability and preserve freedom of navigation.
