European Commission President von der Leyen issued a statement on her social media account on the occasion of the opening of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

Von der Leyen said the General Assembly was beginning under the shadow of a new reality in which “a multipolar and more transactional world” is emerging. Noting that countries may increasingly tend to turn inward, von der Leyen said one thing is clear for Europe.

Von der Leyen stated that the challenges facing the world are too large, complex and interconnected for any one country to tackle alone, adding that Europe will therefore “always choose outreach and cooperation.”

Von der Leyen said Europe will work with reliable and like-minded partners, adding that cooperation will continue through a strong multilateral system created to support peace in today’s world.
