The order directs the US attorney general to reclassify cannabis from a Schedule I narcotic to a Schedule III drug, placing it in the same category as codeine-based Tylenol.

Cannabis will remain illegal at the federal level. However, classifying it as a Schedule III substance will allow broader research into its potential benefits.

Some Republican lawmakers warned against the move, with some arguing it could normalize use.

Speaking at the signing ceremony held Thursday in the Oval Office, Trump said people who are “suffering greatly” – including those with “incurable pain,” cancer, seizure disorders, and veterans with service-related injuries – had “begged” for the change.
