Scientists warn of a global seaweed boom
Stockholm, January 20 (Hibya) – According to researchers at the University of South Florida, over the past two decades seaweed blooms in the tropical Atlantic and western Pacific have expanded at a striking rate of 13.4% per year, with the most dramatic increases occurring after 2008.
In a new paper, researchers say this shift could darken subsurface waters, alter ecosystems and geochemistry, and accelerate climate disruption.
Chuanmin Hu, professor of oceanography at the USF College of Marine Science and senior author of the paper, said: “Globally, it appears we are witnessing a regime shift from a macroalgae-poor ocean to a macroalgae-rich ocean.”
The findings were published in Nature Communications.
