In a new paper, researchers say this shift could darken subsurface waters, alter ecosystems and geochemistry, and accelerate climate disruption.

Chuanmin Hu, professor of oceanography at the USF College of Marine Science and senior author of the paper, said: “Globally, it appears we are witnessing a regime shift from a macroalgae-poor ocean to a macroalgae-rich ocean.”

The findings were published in Nature Communications.
