Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva described the new U.S. tariffs on Brazilian products as "a strategic mistake." Lula argued that the tariffs were imposed for political reasons, stating that the Washington administration put the new duties into effect despite ongoing dialogue and technical talks between the two countries.

Lula said the new tariffs would negatively affect trade between Brazil and the United States, disrupt supply chains, and increase the cost of many products for American consumers. Stressing that Brazil's sovereignty must be respected, Lula said his country remains open to dialogue based on mutual respect but will not accept external interference.
