Hungary and Slovakia to appeal to the EU Court of Justice if RePowerEU is adopted
Budapest, 7 December (Hibya) – Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto announced that if the European Union adopts the RePowerEU plan aimed at restricting Russian energy imports, Hungary and Slovakia will jointly appeal to the Court of Justice of the European Union.
Szijjarto stated that immediately after the plan’s adoption, Hungary will file for annulment at the Court of Justice and request the suspension of the regulation during the judicial process.
He emphasized: “We are taking this step because banning the import of Russian oil and natural gas would make secure energy supply for Hungary and Slovakia impossible and would lead to dramatic price increases.”
Szijjarto also described the regulation as a form of legal fraud, arguing that the plan constitutes a sanction measure requiring unanimous approval and violates both EU treaties, which define energy policy as a national competence, and even the European Commission’s own assessments.
