At the ministers’ meeting to be held on Monday in Brussels, some member states will argue that the burden of the program called the “Solidarity Pool” is too heavy.

In 2026, the relocation of asylum seekers from the countries under the highest migration pressure across the EU is expected to be lower than previously forecast.

At Monday’s meeting, the 27 EU interior ministers will discuss the size of the “solidarity pool,” a mechanism determining the total number of asylum seekers to be relocated the following year and the quota each country must accept or compensate financially.

The European Commission proposed relocating a certain number of asylum seekers from four countries deemed “under migration pressure”: Spain, Italy, Greece and Cyprus.

The details of the proposal remain confidential, but according to sources, the pool consists of around 30,000 people. However, EU member states are expected to try to reduce this figure, as national governments are unwilling to accept more migrants or pay compensation to other states.
