Costa emphasized that the European Union’s enlargement process is now a tangible and achievable opportunity.

He met with Moldovan President Maia Sandu, North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to discuss the steps their countries would take in their accession processes ahead of the EU Summit (EUCO) scheduled for December.

Costa stated that this process requires maintaining the current momentum and pursuing deep reforms based on merit, adding:

“In an era of geopolitical uncertainty and economic instability, a growing EU means a safer, stronger, and more peaceful Europe. Growth is the best investment we can make for our future.”

He noted that 2025 has been a year of concrete progress for enlargement partners and said: “After extensive work, we have achieved real progress. We must continue on the path of reform to make enlargement a reality for the peoples of the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and Moldova.”
