Costa discusses EU budget negotiations with Irish Prime Minister Martin
Dublin, September 17 (Hibya) - European Council President Antonio Costa met with Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin as part of his “Tour of Capitals” and discussed European Union budget negotiations.
European Council President Antonio Costa said he had completed the fourth week of his meetings with EU leaders and noted that during his meeting with Martin in Dublin, he shared the impressions and conclusions he had drawn from his discussions with the leaders.
Costa said the leaders support the goal of reaching an agreement by the end of the year, stressing that this is vital to avoid any disruption in the flow of funding to farmers, regions, researchers and citizens.
Costa said reaching an agreement would require striking a balance and forming a comprehensive package between the size and distribution of the budget, national contributions and new European revenue sources.
Stating that the geopolitical environment has changed, Costa said: “This new reality requires a modernized budget with a new structure.” Emphasizing that European citizens and the economy need stability and predictability, Costa said the next European budget must be adopted on time.
