New clashes erupt between Thailand and Cambodia
Stockholm, December 8 (Hibya) — Thailand carried out airstrikes on Cambodia following new clashes that broke out in the border regions.
Both countries accuse each other of starting the conflict.
The Thai Armed Forces reported that a Thai soldier was killed and seven others were wounded after Cambodian forces opened fire in Ubon Ratchathani province.
In response to the shelling, Thailand conducted airstrikes on Monday against various targets along the disputed border with Cambodia.
The Cambodian Ministry of Defense stated that Cambodian soldiers were first attacked in the Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey border areas.
Thai officials said that approximately 35,000 people had been evacuated from the affected border regions.
Relations between Thailand and Cambodia deteriorated in May, when a Cambodian soldier was shot dead in a cross-border clash. Regular clashes followed until the first ceasefire was achieved in August. However, the sides have clashed several times since then.
In October, U.S. President Donald Trump was in Malaysia to mediate a new ceasefire between the parties. But less than a month later, the ceasefire was suspended.
