Ghebreyesus: A rapid increase is being observed in the H3N2 influenza virus
Geneva, December 17 (Hibya) – World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that influenza activity has increased due to the K subclade of the H3N2 virus, but no rise in severe illness has been observed.
Ghebreyesus announced that the annual influenza season has begun in the Northern Hemisphere.
He noted that global influenza activity remains within normal levels, but since August a rapid increase in the K subclade of the H3N2 influenza virus has been observed in some countries.
Although the data do not indicate an increase in disease severity, it was emphasized that this subclade represents a significant evolution of H3N2 viruses. Ghebreyesus stressed that vaccines remain vital for people at high risk of influenza complications and for their caregivers.
