She was found guilty of influencing Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to obtain a plot of land for her family on the outskirts of Dhaka. However, Siddiq vehemently rejects this allegation.

Siddiq, who lives in London and denies the charges, is unlikely to serve the sentence.

The Hampstead and Highgate MP still faces a series of outstanding charges in Bangladesh.

Following the fall of the Hasina regime, prosecutors in Bangladesh launched numerous extensive cases against the former leader, her associates, and relatives.

Siddiq, who resigned from her Treasury post in January due to her ties to her aunt, has been on trial in Dhaka since August.

Court documents alleged that Siddiq “used her special authority to pressure and influence her aunt and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to obtain [a plot of land] for her mother Rehana Siddiq, her sister Azmina Siddiq, and her brother Radwan Siddiq.”

A prosecutor from the Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had earlier stated that Siddiq was being tried as a Bangladeshi citizen because authorities had confiscated her Bangladeshi passport, ID card, and tax number.

Siddiq’s lawyers told the Financial Times that she “never had an ID card or voter identity” and “has not held a passport since childhood,” rejecting the claim that she is a Bangladeshi citizen.

Judge Rabiul Alam sentenced her to two years in prison and a fine of 100,000 Bangladeshi Taka (821 USD). If she fails to pay, another six months will be added to her sentence.

When the trial began, the MP said prosecutors had made “baseless and disturbing allegations conveyed to the media but never formally communicated to me by investigators.”

A statement on Siddiq’s behalf continued:

“From the beginning, I have made it clear that I have done nothing wrong and will respond to any credible evidence presented to me. Continuing to tarnish my name for political gain is both unfounded and harmful.”
